How to Make Comics by Homer Simpson
Hi! I'm Homer Simpson, you may remember me from such threads as "Band" and "Dr.H.Simpson".
I'm here today to tell you all about making a comic. (And before any mods lock this, Ioji gave me permission to make this thread.)
Are you ready to learn!? Good! Let's roll!
1. Plan out how your comic is going to be.
2. When you know, it's time to start making.
3. Got MS Paint? Don't fret, my friend, paint works just as well!
(a) Set up the comic page in either paint or photo shop I.E Title, Number of comic, Name of comic(if it has one)
(b) Think about any characters you might need (This will either be Non Playing Characters or Citizens of BTC)
(c) Go to a public place and ask if anyone wants to be in the comic. If they do, tell them to meet you somewhere. If you need someone in a later time of a comic, do that part of the comic without them, then go ask. (Chances are they have probably gone offline by the time you want them)
(d) Click onto a new MS Paint or Photo Shop page, so, you should have two MS Paint pages up separately.
(e) Tell the character what to say (Or draw speech bubbles onto it, just make sure you tell them you are doing this, or they might get annoyed)
(f) Quickly Print Screen (Prt Sc) what they say. Print screen is normally somewhere above the arrow keys.
(g) Done that? Great. Tell the character in your comic to wait a sec while you get things sorted.
(h) Open back up the fresh MS Paint or Photo Shop screen. The press "Edit" at the top and go down until you find "Paste". You should now come up with what you print screened. Trouble is, you have all the rest of the things like your task bar in the way.
(i) If you use paint, on the little task bar with objects like the eraser, on the top right hand side there is a dotted square. Left click it. Now select around the bits you want by holding down the mouse and drag in the direction you want to go.
(j) This should select the bit you wanted. Now take let go of the button there should be a dotted line around what you selected. Now right click what was selected. Click copy. Now open back up the page with the title and all that.
(k) Click edit at the top again and click paste. Now click the picture, hold it down, and move it to the place you want it to go. If you want to make it more neat, and a thick line around the panel.
(l) Continue this with all the other panels.
4. Upload it onto a picture site I prefer www.tinypic.com
5. Highlight the URL with [IMG][/IMG] around it. Then write click it and click copy. Go to the Warbears Comics Log and paste the url in a new post.
6. Make a space or two then put the URL again. Delete the [IMG][/IMG] off of the second one. The post should look something like this:

or
Your_comic_URL_here.com
Remember: If you still don't understand it or can't do it, ask someone else nicely who makes comics. If they don't say yes, simply accept it, forget it, and ask someone else.
If this doesn't clear all of your answers, just ask here.
Picture Examples
Example 1

Refers to step "3-i to 3-j"
Example 2

Refers to step "4"
NOTE: This is not the place to ask to be in a comic.
What Makes a Good Comic by Pip Panzerotten
Ever wondered why, when Ioji and Co. are picking new comic team members and you don't get the job? Well for starters there are three main things that can hold you back:
- Your storyline
- Your editing
- Your format
Here in this guide, I am going to help you fix any of these things that you might be having trouble with.
- Your storyline -
Basically, you want a short storyline that isn't to 'out there' and unless you are doing a two part comic or what ever, always come to a resolution.
Now, another thing you should consider is your grammer and spelling. Having too many typos can be a problem as people can have trouble understanding your storyline. Here's two examples of good and bad.
Bad

Good

Taken from Frankengoober Simpsons "Frank" comics.
- Your editing -
Now it's alright if you have paint because thats not the problem. You are (jks ). This is where most of the comic makers go wrong, the editing part of it. The main problems for comic makers may include:
- unwanted cropping/resizing of frames
- actual dimensions of the entire comic
- (if using paint) The sheer quality of the editing (adding in blood, cutting someones head off etc)
When creating your frames, try to keep the same height for all of them. (I use 120px) But if you need different heights for different frames, try to keep the height of the frames the same per line. Here are some examples:
Cropping and resizing
Bad
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=4lyk4ep
As you can see, the middle frames are slightly resized
Good
http://img117.imageshack.us/my.php?image=thegunhp1.png
As you can see, he hasn't resized the frames keeping them nice and neat and unpixelated
Taken from Blade Giffuri comics
Comic dimensions
Bad
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/8468/lifeofthebtc05tf4.png
The actual dimensions in this comic are far to big making it very blurry and hard to read.
Good
http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/364/lifeofthebtc10hk3.png
As you can see, it is small enough for the image host to render the full picture and not have to either crop or resize the full picture.
Taken from Myroc Andersons "Life of the BTC" comics
Frame positioning and dimensions
Bad
http://i11.tinypic.com/43cozo9.png
As you can see, his frames are all over the place!
Good

Although not quite the neatest of neat, but at least this comic keeps the law of keeping your frames in line.
Taken from Homer Simpsons "The adventures of Homer Simpson [and friends]" comics
- Your Format -
Another major problem for comic makers if their format. Most comic makers just choose a 'nice' font (mainly comic sans) and a fluorescent background. Well this is the easiest solved problem of all problems.
-Your font
You want something big, thick and bold that you can use as a banner across the top of your comic.
-Your background
This is another major problem. Of course you can go for the simple white or -wb- pattern, but do not, i repeat do NOT go for a fluoro color (Especially not green). You want people to be attracted to the comic. Not the background! Anyway, here are some examples:
Bad

Good

-Copying ideas-
When making your comic sometimes you may be tempted to take the ideas of other comic creators. Sometimes it will be for a reason that has a funny storyline and isn't the same, but just uses a common element (Like Frank-o's).It's best to make sure your storyline isn't the same and it would be best to ask said comic creator who originally had the idea first if you can use his object or theme first. E.g. Frank-o's, Xtreme Sliding

-Pips Theory of Hilarity-
The theory states the following:
"The longer the story, the better the climax"
This applies to all humorus comics.
Breaking this barrier by making a better climax can make your comics more successful.
Breaking this barrier by making the comic much longer, your comics reviews may worsen.
AND YOUR DONE!
Some other things you could try is adding a nice thick border around your frames and around the edge of your comic. You can also try using silhouettes in your background around the bottom edge, around the sides or even a silhouetted logo in the center of your comic. You can try adding things like banners or shadows. Fancy borders or even patterns to your frames.
Good luck! _________________

I noticed how to do it.
And I'm deeply embarrassed about my first few comics. _________________ [Citation Needed] |
