I've seen a few items (mostly the fireplaces) and threads, and what I thought was having items that connect to the wall, similar to the items on the floor.
Here's an example:

The current system allow items to be scattered on the floor tiles. There could be a similar system, but only with long rectangular wall tiles for different items (such as a fire place, a painting and a singing fish toy).

I head this idea before, except you've gone into much better detail over it. I think it's a very good idea. But, what items are you gonna put up apart from pictures and festive decorations?

I agree that our houses need more decoration, whether it be wall paintings or a moose head, our apartments need something extra.
