I have seen this and the only conclusion is that it's PHPBB's fault. That system is slow and dodgey anywho.

I's unlikely they are.
If it makes any difference, I'll address this problem for you.

May I ask for a new rule that guest can't look at profiles until they join the website.

Suggest that in the "Share your ideas" forum.

I've done a bit of research, and you can't 'post a message' or "viewing private messages.' In order to do so, you need to log in or register.

What happens(not completely confirmed) is (when you aren't logged in) and you try doing those things, the "log in" screen appears and those 'statuses' appear on the "who's online" page.

Like i said before, they can't do those things.

Johnathan is right. When someone (or something) tries to open the PM page, it will display as a guest reading PMs. What actually happens is that they only see a login screen.

It's very likely that it's a search engine indexing bot which is trying to index the PM pages. The problem appears on other forums using phpBB 2 as well, but is gone in phpBB 3 because of a new system for handling search engine bots.

I believe however that it's highly unlikely that we'll upgrade to it soon.

Please do not post in this topic unless you can supply additional information. Because only users with higher privleges can see the IP addresses of the guests, it is highly unlikely that anyone else can tell us more about these.

Ok Comanderbear, what the hell? Mr told us not to post in this topic unless you have something relevant, and that's far from it.

I get the feeling it isn't because names on the forum now have the first AND last name.

@Comanderbear and Lolzer Read before posting in the Technical Bugs forum.

@Homsar No, they are in fact 'guests.'
