----What is it?----
Sunshine City, as you can probably guess from its name, is a small online world in the same vein as BTC. You will be able to go to a location and interact with people just like the good ol' days. Sort of. You're all familiar with what BTC is, so I'll go ahead and explain what this is NOT:
- First and foremost this is just for fun! I want to emphasise that this isn't anything too big and that I'm undertaking to help me learn how to do networking and stuff.
- This isn't going to be as big as BTC. Initially it's going to be a small world with one location.
- Currently, there aren't going to be any accounts and it'll work on a guest-based system. Accounts will happen at some point, but it's not the highest priority (despite the login screenshot below...)
---How is it being made?---
I'm going to be as transparent with this as possible, which is one of the reasons why I'm setting this thread up. The other reason is that I want feedback on the direction I'm taking this - please post your opinions and ideas below! For now, any ideas submitted should be necessities.
For anyone that's interested in the more technical "how", I'm programming this in a relatively new language called "Haxe" using the OpenFL and HaxeFlixel libraries. If anyone is into their programming I'd suggest having a look at them; they're pretty cool! By using this language, I am able to publish to many different platforms - for now I'm aiming for web (Flash or HTML5, I've not decided yet) and Windows.
---Screenshots---
This is the login screen! Not much to explain here. Login!
This is an early days screenshot. My little test bed. It doesn't look like much but I assure you, there's a lot to it already! The graphics look janky because it's rendered at 1080p and I've not written anything to properly handle downsizing to low resolutions yet. <.<
This is two people logged in at once! The server is localhost at the minute, so only I can access it!
---Development Status---
I'll try to keep this first post updated, but most of the information for the project will be in new posts below. I'm not going to keep any formal kind of "I'm 70% done!" type information here, simply because I'm trying to keep this as relaxed as possible. Follow me on Twitter for my ramblings, and information on updates as they happen.
That's everything! I hope you're as excited about this as I am while making it. It's a fairly big undertaking, so please be nice to me. ;_; _________________ Twitter |

The only question that needs answering: Will there be rainbow socks? _________________

Thanks for the feedback!
What you're currently looking at is about 3 days work honestly. I'll be slowing down a bit now though as the basis is done.
The speech bubbles are the next big thing I want in, but they'll take a little time. Along with that, I'll probably be drawing locations and characters.
I'll be weaving my own style into this. I've stuck with isometric simply because it was interesting to program, and I think I'll go with vectors still. We shall see what I come up with.
And rainbow socks? It's a possibility I guess. _________________ Twitter |

Sort of! It'll be different though. I'm working on the design of the locations and stuff at the minute. Probably going to have to rework that login screen... <.< _________________ Twitter |

Ideas definitely. I'll be fine on the artistic side. Things that were missing from BTC and stuff that you feel should be there and whatever. I scanned the share your ideas forum a bit and picked up on group whispering, for instance. _________________ Twitter |

Thanks you two! Good to have your support.
I've currently been taking a break from the programming (since that's all that's been happening so far, really...) and started designing the location. I settled on a pub since people liked the bar of BTC so much. I've planned out the location in Illustrator, and I'm currently drawing the assets.
As a bit of a warning I am at university currently, so if work piles up I'll have to go a little slower on this. But it's getting done, don't worry.
EDIT: That's a point. If anyone has anything in particular they want in a pub environment, shoot. Although I'll have to say no to anything like darts or pool for now - don't want to be focusing on games within games. My current notes after a bit of research is as follows.
Quote: |
- very brown
- shiny surfaces, purple goes well in reflections
- checkered floor around bar, carpet at tables
- walls matte. wooden trimming like on home! diagonal structs etc.
- windows near sofas and tables
- bar area with stools
- taps and mugs on bar (able to take them?)
- lights on bar
- sofas against wall
- couple of tables about
- fire place
- pictures on walls (can read descriptions?)
- chalk board somewhere (possible to make specials change every day?) |
