Basically, programs don't work on my computer properly. I mean, my Email and the Internet work fine, but if I click "Paint" it won't open, or if I click "Microsoft Word" it won't open. I can get to programs like these by going through my files and opening a document/art work I've already made, and then clearing it. But things I download won't work either. It's just the shortcuts, but in a way not. The ORIGINAL shortcuts won't work either.
When I click a program a window pops up
it's titled "Open With"
it says "Choose the program you want to use to open this file", and it has a selection of "recommended programs" and "other programs". None of them work.
Also, everything from my mini task bar is gone, except "Tiscali Broadband", "Local Are Connection", "Volume" (Which no longer works for the same reason) and "Safely Remove Hardware".
Please help. |

Sounds like the .LNK problem. I don't know the solution though, google for info.
Go to a folder, click Tools>Folder Options>View and find the option "Show file extensions" to see if the problematic programs have a .lnk extension. _________________ Punch a duck |

I suggest doing what Oscar said because that usually means that you have a registry error that makes it so your computer doesn't recognize files with the .exe file extension. I suggest trying to do a system restore from a point where you weren't having this problem. If that doesn't work you will have to fix the registry. How you fix it varies depending on your computer's operating system. A problem like this may have been caused by a virus so I would suggest running a virus scan to make sure your computer isn't infected. _________________

This could just be the fact that you are rebooting your computer. _________________

How about we continue helping me?
Update on the issue: It hasn't happened to any other user, and I think it's a virus, so I'll get mum or dad to do a virus scan. |

Zick, go into your options menu, look under privacy, and make sure that you have it set to remember history.
Twigglet, even if there is a virus and you do get rid of it you will probably still have to fix a registry error with your computer. _________________

If you do decide to have someone else fix it I would think you could find a computer repair service a little bit cheaper than that. Most of the people I know only charge between $10 and $40. _________________
