I probably would stop talking to them, or maybe not get on at all,

how about for example you get a certain amount of points in an hour, then in the same hour your score gets a multiplier?
example:
(in one hour only then multiplier resets)
50-100 points = 1.5x multiplier (credits only)
100-500 points = 2.0x multiplier (credits only)
500+ points = 2.5x multiplier (credits only)
