would I be right in saying you fuse them together, like I have done here, its the body, ears and tails of tails & the head and legs of knuckles. I may have done it wrong, but i dunno, I'm new to this idea. (im not apply frank, i just wanted to see if i had the right idea in what your doing.  )

marbz,thats really good,except you forgot to recolor,normally the sprites have certain colors to them,so you need to recolor it to make it look like one thing,but incredible job

Recolouring is made easy in photoshop with Hue/Saturation.
