It's easy for everybody to be supportive of this whilst BTC isn't up, but it isn't really that common for the servers to be down and this would completely defeat the purpose of BTC when everything's fine.

Not really, because an IRC is booooring. Whereas BTC will always be #1 because of it's intricate designing and interactive aspects.

It wouldn't be pointless if BTC was down, like now. And although occurrences like this are rare, when they do come, it hits hard and everyone is left scratching their heads. So it'd be good if it was just a last resort/emergency feature.
