What I attempted to do was copy a music file from my iPod to my documents, but I can't figure out how. I tried the simplest of methods (e.g. copy and paste, moving directly with mouse) but those didn't work.
Any ideas? |

I don't think it's possible from your iPod to do that. _________________ I'm old now :/ |

When you add music to your iTunes/iPod, it converts all imported files into a .itl (iTunes library). So no, you can't take music from your iPod and put it into my documents. You need the original music files.
This is done to stop fraud - for instance, if you just took somebody's iPod and it didn't convert the music files into this library, then you'd just be able to steal all of their music. _________________ Twitter |

iTunes is a way of storing music. If you want to put music into anything, you'll need the original .mp3, .wav etc.
If you've lost the original music file, then I'm sorry, but as far as I'm aware, there's no way of retrieving it again. _________________ Twitter |

I'd assume you checked where iTunes stores music on the PC?
C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media (or something very similar) should be all your music organized by artist and then album. _________________

This is another reason why I dislike iPods/iTunes/Apple in general, their horrendous DRM. I rarely download from music stores because I'm a CD collecting whore but when I do it's from Amazon MP3. Also what you are trying to do is piss-easy on my Sony Walkman. =P |

They don't use DRM at all. At least not for the last 2 years.
I'll assume your on your Mac, but the same works for Windows anyway:
Hop into Finder (or WE) to your default music folder* and then a folder titled "iTunes". That folder, is basically your source folder for your iTunes library; Music, apps, movies etc. You'll want the "iTunes Music" folder and you've got the original files. In short:
Code: |
Music > iTunes > iTunes Music |
*This is under the assumption that you've not changed to source folder in iTunes
E: Also, you can drag to the desktop within iTunes to just copy the file as you would with any other file _________________ ^captincroc |

So they no longer use the .m4a file format when purchasing from iTunes? It's gotta be MP3 or nothing for me. |

Oh, you confused me. They used to have ridiculous DRM which made it physically impossible to back files up to any other place which they got rid of like 2009. They still use m4a, understandably. _________________ ^captincroc |
