The Ouroboros Project - Prologue

None of them knew how they had gotten there, or why. As far as they knew, the only thing they had in common was that one night, they had gone to sleep like normal and then woke up in the room they currently found themselves in. The room itself was a strange affair. It was completely devoid of furniture or windows. One could call it a metal box with doors. Doors, however, were plenty. Six of them lined the walls of the room, and each one had a number painted on it in red paint.

The same red paint had also been used to write two messages on the walls. One said "A TSARINA MASHING" and the other "A MAMA WAGERS BERET". Nonsense, or was there a deeper meaning to the messages? The most important things in the room, however, were the participants. Besides their backstories of falling asleep and waking up here, there was actually one more thing everyone had in common: The bracelet on their left wrist.

The bracelets were sturdy metal ones, impossible to remove by hand. They each had a simple LCD screen for displaying numbers, though for the moment, all the screens were turned off. One person in the room was however lacking a bracelet, and laid face-down in a corner of the room. The nearby ID card identified him as Globox Simpson, and a quick check would identify his pulse as zero.

All of a sudden, a synthetic voice broke the veil of silence that laid across the room. "Welcome to the Ouroboros Project. It is a game where you shall put your lives on the line. The goal is simple: Leave this facility alive. In this building, there is a number of doors carrying a red number. To go through them, simply set your bracelet number to the number on the door, and it will allow you inside. Going through a door without the right bracelet number set will cause immediate punishment. An unlimited amount of participants can pass through each door. However, some doors carry misfortune, others advantages, and some carry neither. It is up to you to find out. A bit of randomness makes a game exciting, right? Good luck. Maybe you'll find out why you were brought here, and what your purpose is.

One last thing.

Only one person may leave this facility alive."

======
Mission statement: Get out of the facility alive and discover the truth behind everything. To do this, you must PM me each round with three things:

1. Which door you wish to leave a trap behind
2. Which door you wish to leave a treasure behind
3. Which door you wish to go through

These must be different doors. Each door has a points value, which is added to your score at the round's end. The points value is increased by treasures, decreased by traps, and unaffected by going through. Each round, the participant(s) with the lowest score will die. Failing to submit an action is an automatic -2 to your score, and doing this twice in a row will result in immediate elimination.

You have until Wednesday August 2nd, 23.59 GMT+1 to send me your actions, and there are 6 doors to choose from.

It didn't take people long to start setting their bracelets. Nobody wanted to be trapped inside that one room forever, after all. After a short while, the group had been split up into five smaller teams, each taking one door. This meant that one door would be left untouched, though hopefully, that wouldn't matter. For now, survival was their main focus.

Team 1 - Rojoco, Katz and Jurgen
Rojoco, Katz, and Jurgen all set their bracelet displays to 1, and then stepped through the door bearing the same number. It swung shut between them with a loud metallic bang, and the "clack" that followed confirmed it had locked behind them. Only one way to go, then. The three gentlemen found themselves in what appeared to be some kind of luxurious living quarters after walking down a short hallway.

It was quite a difference from the empty metal box they had been in previously. A soft red carpet covered the floor, and a king-sized bed stood against the wall, with a desk standing across from it. In addition to that, the room was lit by a soft yellow light, making for a nice contrast to the hard white lighting the first room had had.

On the desk laid two files, labelled "F.L." and "L.H.". Upon closer examination, one would find photographs of two young women inside the files, as well as sheets of paper referring to "previous incidents" and "unfinished business".
Many words were however blacked out, which made it rather hard to understand what exactly was being talked about. Nonetheless, the group decided to take the files with them.

Rojoco (+2)
Katz (+2)
Jurgen (+2)

Team 2 - Takeoshi and Jonpatrick
Takeoshi and Jonpatrick stepped through door 2, bracing themselves for the worst... and found that there was nothing but an empty hallway behind it. Not the worst thing that could have happened, though not the best either. At least they were safe for the moment.

Takeoshi (0)
Jonpatrick (0)

Team 3 - Joyce
Joyce went through door 4 by herself, stepping out into pitch-black darkness.
A small red dot on her left side indicated a light switch, and she was lucky she managed to switch it on just in time. Otherwise, she wouldn't have seen that there was a giant blade swinging down from the ceiling in her direction. She managed to dodge from the worst of it, though the sharp pain of metal slicing her leg wasn't nice. Once she had managed to stand up again, she continued forward, wounded but glad to be alive.

Joyce (-1)

Team 4 - Ninjabear, Zane, Marshall and Scarlett
A group of four people went through door 5, finding themselves in an unexpected place. It was a large, well-lit room with various paintings lining the walls. An art gallery, in a place like this? Nonetheless, the group moved to examine the paintings. One of them depicted a snake biting its own tail, another one a group of people wandering an underground cave system, and a third one a creature bearing features from a goat, lion and snake. There was something oddly familiar about the artworks, though nobody could quite put their finger on it.

Ninjabear (+1)
Zane (+1)
Marshall (+1)
Scarlett (+1)

Team 5 - Knyh and Miniman
After going through door 6, Knyh and Miniman found themselves in what appeared to be a laboratory of some sort. Many different kinds of machines lined the walls of the rooms, each one with an unclear purpose. To someone just taking a quick glance, it almost looked like a snake nest with all the different cables running back and forth across the floor. All machines seemed to be turned off, except a terminal at the far end of the room, lighting up the nearby area in a light green glow. Knyh began operating the terminal, eventually coming across some files. A researcher's log of some kind. Much of it was restricted or expunged for one reason or another, though references to "broken circles" and "third iteration" were frequent. The last entry mentioned that a breakthrough had been made, though nothing more specific than that. Meanwhile, Miniman pressed his ear to the wall, hearing a low humming sound, similar to a whale's singing.

Knyh (+3)
Miniman (+3)

Unfortunate indecisive soul - Jonathon
While the others had been quick to decide which door to go through, Jonathon had been unable to decide. Once everyone else had gone through their doors, he found that door 3 hadn't been touched. That would be the obvious choice, then. He began walking to the door, though something stopped him. A sharp but quick pain directly beneath his bracelet, as if he had been injected with a needle, made itself known. Maybe he had been too slow. As his vision blurred, he fell to the floor, never to rise again. Perhaps he should have made up his mind in time.

Jonathon (DEAD)

The rest of the participants found themselves in the same room, another large one with six numbered doors. Another round was about to begin...

Jonathon died. The next round has six doors, and you have until Saturday August 5th (coincidentally my birthday!), 23.59 GMT+1 to submit your actions.

While concerned about Jonathon's death, the group decided to continue on. After all, letting the past define you wasn't a very good tactic for getting forward. This time, they split up in a fashion that once again would leave one door untouched. That had been a good choice last time, given that door 3 had been the most dangerous of all.

Team 1 - Jurgen and Ninjabear

Beyond door 1, which was not a river, the land of the dead did not lie. In fact, was laid beyond it seemed to be some kind of medbay. Metal hospital beds with white bedding lined the walls, with drapes separating them from each other. All the beds were empty, though red stains on the sheets and walls told a story of their own. What really drew the investigators' attention, however, were a set of empty bottles on top of a metal cabinet by the end of the room. They were labelled with various complicated names, though some had more helpful descriptions. "Enhances communicative abilities" and "Increased TP ability" were two of them. Whatever they were, they probably weren't normal medication.

Jurgen (+3)
Ninjabear (+3)

Team 2 - Zane, Knyh and Takeoshi

Zane and Knyh were both in good moods following their last venture, which had been fruitful for them both. Takeoshi's last one had been neither good or bad. This one, however, would be a different story. At first, there seemed to be nothing wrong with the room they had stepped into, until sections of the empty room's walls slid open to reveal metal pipes. The ends looked darker and were filled with holes. A low hissing sound was heard. In the next minute, the room was an inferno. Without even thinking about it, Zane and Knyh ran for the exit. They managed to get out without any major injuries, though slightly less clothing than they had entered with. It turned out "Stop, drop and roll" was indeed a good thing to remember.

Zane (-2)
Knyh (-2)
Takeoshi (-2)

Team 3 - Joyce, Marshall and Jonpatrick
Once again, door 3 would be proven to be dangerous, and a team member would be proven to be rather unlucky. The trio going through the door found themselves in an empty hallway, were nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. Until the ceiling started descending towards them, of course. Like Zane and Knyh had done behind the other door, the three of them started running as fast as they could. Only two of them made it across. With her leg wounded, Joyce didn't run as fast as the others, and falling over didn't make it easier. A loud squish was heard, and what had once been a participant now looked like a someone had made a mess in a butchery. Actually seeing someone die like that in front of them would surely take a toll on the other two.

Joyce (DEAD)
Marshall (-2)
Jonpatrick (-2)

Team 4 - Scarlett and Katz
Thankfully, door 4 wasn't very dangerous. Scarlett and Katz were relieved to find that there weren't any death traps or anything of the sort in the room they stepped into. Instead, it looked like an ordinary office. There was nothing weird about it, really. Desks with computers on them stood in neat lines, and the two of them went to look at the various pieces of paper spread across the desks. They seemed to be logs of some kind, detailing software crashes with power surges being the cause. Mentions of connections failing to be established or being very weak were also frequent, as were "sequence errors", whatever those were, and warnings from the faciliy's oxygen dispersal system.

Scarlett (+1)
Katz (+1)

Team 5 - Rojoco and Miniman

The sixth door opened, revealing... nothing. Just an empty hallway. There had to be something strange about it, right? Some kind of hidden trick or a trap, like the flamethrowers or descending ceiling? No, the strangest thing about this hallway was how there was nothing strange about it.

Rojoco (0)
Miniman (0)

After their various ventures, everyone except Joyce reunited in another large room, this time a grandiose stairwell where two doors sat by the top of the stairs and three by the bottom. The realization that death was an inevitable part of this game had begun setting in, and even if some were panicking, some saw it as motivation to do their best and get out alive. Fear is an excellent incentive, after all.

Joyce died. There are five doors to choose between, and do so before Wednesday August 9th, 23.59 GMT+1!

The thought of actually dying as part of the game had all of a sudden become a very real thing. Prior to that, it had seemed so abstract. Kind of like how bad things on the news always gave that "Well, that sucks" feeling before you clicked on to an entertainment video and forgot all about it, until something happened close to you and you couldn't think about anything else. Life could be strange sometimes. While some saw Joyce's fate as a grim reminder of their mortality, some saw it as a source for a joy of simply being alive. No matter the feelings, they had to continue, or they would face certain death. Within a moment, five teams had formed.

Team 1 - Zane and Jurgen
They weren't sure of what they should expect to be behind door 1, though it was definitely not a bar. Well, even elaborate creepy facilities with unclear purposes needed a place for people to relax, after all. The dark green walls were lined with various pieces of art, and mahogany tables lined the red carpeting. It was a rather nice place, although most people would prefer their bars not catching fire. All of a sudden, a large flame burst up from behind the bar disk, quickly turning the calm and pleasant bar into a hellish inferno. Jurgen saw that the exit was starting to close, and he dove through, with his clothing badly burnt. Behind the locked door, screams echoed, before eventually falling completely silent.

Zane (DEAD)
Jurgen (-5)

Team 2 - Takeoshi and Scarlett
Beyond door 2 was thankfully not another death trap. Not this time, at least. All they could see was some kind of archive. The small dark room had filing cabinets along all four walls, though most of them were locked. In the only one that wasn't locked, there were two files, labelled "L.H." and "F.L.". While a lot of information was blacked out, some of it still made sense. There were pictures of two young women, and repeated mentions of some sort of previous incidents, though with no explanation for hat they were. Perhaps that would be something for later.

Takeoshi (+1)
Scarlett (+1)

Team 3 - Ninjabear and Jonpatrick
There were always degrees of misfortune in life. Sometimes, it was just as simple as something one would expect to exist in a particular spot not existing there, or at all. More specifically, a step in the staircase Jonpatrick and Ninjabear walked down was missing. The two men found themselves tripping and tumbling down the stairs, not all too hurt, though not unhurt either. Someone really should have warned them about those stairs.

Ninjabear (-1)
Jonpatrick (-1)

Team 4 - Knyh, Rojoco and Marshall
Door 4 opened, giving the three men who had stepped through it an unexpected view. A large room was in front of them, with a glass floor. Beneath the floor was a dark watery abyss, with the occasional fish swimming by. An aquarium? Why would someone have something of that size in a place like this? The only clue they could find to what this place was was a dropped piece of paper mentioning something about "Submersion increasing communicative abilities". What kind of communication would that be?

Knyh (+2)
Rojoco (+2)
Marshall (+2)

Team 5 - Katz and Miniman
Last, but definitely not least, were Katz and Miniman. They wandered through the fifth door, finding that it lead them down a hallway to some kind of meeting room. Inside was a table with empty leather chairs around it, as well as a whiteboard on one of the walls. On the whiteboard, some things were written. "High stakes increase the probability of a successful connection", "Phase two almost ready to begin", "Snail planted" and other things that made varying amounts of sense. In addition to that, there was a graph depicting what appeared to be a timeline, though with arrows pointing back and forth between different points. Whatever this facility had been doing, it seemed to be complexed.

Katz (+3)
Miniman (+3)

The group eventually reconvened once again, missing a person this time as well. It was starting to become a disturbing pattern. Then again, they had been told that only one of them would get to leave alive. Was that really true? And if so, why? Determined to find out, they faced down another set of five doors.

It seemed there was no end in sight for this game. No matter how many doors they kept going through, new ones kept appearing. Although, nothing is infinite, except for the universe and human stupidity. (The first one is still up for debate) There had to be an exit around here somewhere, right? Although, if what the mysterious voice had told them was true, only one could leave the facility alive. In that case, who would that be? Perhaps it would work itself out. With that thought in the back of their heads, they faced down another set of doors...

Team 1 - Jurgen
Jurgen stepped through door 1 alone, pleased to find that it was not a death trap. Behind it was some kind of ordinary living quarters, consisting of a small room with a bed and a desk, as well as a bathroom connecting to it. On the desk laid a tiny piece of paper, without any big words on it. It seemed to be the start of a letter. "Dr. Klim, I am writing to you regarding Fls" was written on it, though it seemed that "Fls" was part of a longer word and that the paper had been ripped mid-word. While it didn't tell him much right now, it could prove valuable later.

Jurgen (+1)

Team 2 - Marshall and Takeoshi

Marshall and Takeoshi went through the second door together, and found... nothing. Just another empty hallway. Well, at least it was better than a death trap.

Marshall (+0)
Takeoshi (+0)

Team 3 - Katz

Katz went on his own through door 3, and discovered a room similar to the one Jurgen had entered. Of course, he had no idea about Jurgen's discovery. This room also had a desk with a tiny piece of paper, also addressed to the mysterious Dr. Klim. "Dr. Klim, about Lab" it said. It seemed like "Lab" was also part of something longer. "Laboratory", perhaps? Dr. Klim was most likely a scientist, so it would make sense writing to them about a laboratory. Someone else might know more. Right as he was about to leave, he found another scrap of paper. "House, whose disappearance has been a question for" was written on it, though there was nothing to give context to it. Maybe another player could know.

Katz (+2)

Team 4 - Knyh

Knyh would not be as fortunate as the others, although he was not the most unfortunate either. Behind door 4 was a hallway with something they had all been lacking: Windows. Although, as nice as windows are most of the time, they are not too nice when they crack open and water starts flowing in. (Or when installing things and rebooting without your consent) In a panic, Knyh ran through the hallway while the torrent rushed over him. With little to no breath left and completely soaked clothes, he managed to get through a large iron door that shut firmly behind him. The only good thing to come out of this was the realization that the facility was underwater. Why that was the case, he did not know.

Knyh (-3)

Indecisive slowpokes - Everyone else

While the five gentleman listed above had been quick to choose their doors, the other ones were not quite as fast. They were left standing without any idea of what to do, until a sharp pain from their bracelets told them it was time to go. Well, all of them except one. While starting to move, Jonpatrick let out a loud gasp and fell to the ground, never to rise again. At that moment, his bracelet detached, showing that the underside of it had four sharp needles attached. Injectors of some kind?

Jonpatrick (DEAD)
Ninjabear (-2)
Rojoco (-2)
Miniman (-2)
Scarlett (-2)

After deciding to leave Jonpatrick's body behind, everyone gathered by the next set of doors. This time, there was four of them. It looked like the number of doors was slowly shrinking as the game progressed. Why that was, nobody knew.

The immediate threat of death was starting to feel weirdly normal by now. The game had only gone on for a few hours, and yet, going through doors and narrowly avoiding death was starting to feel like a dentist visit or presentation. A lot of nervosity and shakiness at the start, followed by a feeling of relief and "that wasn't too bad" once it was all over. Despite that, most of them just wished to go home by now. This had been going on for far too long.

Door 1 - Jurgen and Katz
Jurgen and Katz looked at each other, then stepped through door 1 together. Whatever it was they had expecting to find, it certainly wasn't this. A pile of printed emails laid on top of a large desk in some kind of office, scattered haphazardly. Did the desk belong to a very sloppy worker, or had someone been looking for something? Curious, the two gentlemen took a peek at the emails. There was a common thread among all of them: They all mentioned a "G. Simpson" and some kind of "curse" that had affected two people prior. Somehow, that name sounded familiar...

Jurgen (+3)
Katz (+3)

Door 2 - Knyh, Takeoshi, and Scarlett

The trio that entered door 2 would not be as fortunate as the duo in door 1. Right from the second they stepped through the door, something felt very off. That was a bad sign, but since they had that door locked in, the possibilities were certain death or less certain death. One of those options sounded more appealing to the group. They kept walking through a hallway for a short while, before Scarlett saw a small white object flying at a high velocity in her direction. She dove towards the floor, bringing Knyh with her. There wasn't time to grab Takeoshi, as he was soon about to find out. Before Takeoshi realized what was going on, a swarm of the white objects struck him, leaving him limp and unresponsive once the onslaught had stopped. While Knyh and Scarlett had made it, they weren't unaffected.

Knyh (-2)
Takeoshi (DEAD)
Scarlett (-2)

Door 3 - Marshall

Marshall decided to tackle door 3 on his own, taking a deep breath while he stepped through it. With a metallic clang, the door closed behind him, and he glanced at the room in front of him. There wasn't much to it, just your average bedroom. Seemed to be many of those within this facility. Not too surprising, given that it seemed to be a habitat of some kind. Despite a thorough search effort, Marshall did not find anything of interest. As he grabbed the handle of the exit door, a sharp pain in his palm reminded him to be more careful the next time. A razor had been placed on the handle, in a perfect palm-slicing position. Defence or malice? No matter the intent, it hurt.

Marshall (-1)

Door 4 - Ninjabear and Miniman

Once again, one of the doors would prove to have nothing behind it, just a passageway to the next area. That was probably for the best, given what other things had been found behind the doors of this facility.

Ninjabear (0)
Miniman (0)

Unfortunate indecisive soul - Rojoco

While everyone else had been quick enough to get through their door in time, Rojoco had been too slow to choose, and found himself left behind. That didn't matter all too much, though. The injectors on the inside of his bracelet activated, and within moments, he laid immobile on the ground.

Not too long after, the group was once again reassembled, although with two people less than when they had left. On the plus side, there was only three doors now. Given that the number of doors had been slowly shrinking during the course of the game, perhaps there was a chance to finish it soon?

There couldn't be much left now. The original thirteen participants had been reduced to seven, and there were only three doors. The words "only one person may leave this facility alive" still haunted them, but perhaps it was just a trick to turn them against each other. A place as big as this had to have some kind of emergency exits the mastermind hadn't thought of. If that was the case, they had to be somewhere behind these doors. There was no way back, at least. Steeling themselves once more, the remaining participants stepped through the doors.

Door 1 - Jurgen, Ninjabear, Katz, Marshall and Miniman
Forming the largest door team the game had seen, the five men stepped into... an empty hallway. Well, if nothing else, it meant that most of the participants would survive for another round. A mastermind or spectator might however see it as a large anticlimax. Kind of like giving a story an open ending and then writing a sequel that answers far too much.

Jurgen (0)
Ninjabear (0)
Katz (0)
Marshall (0)
Miniman (0)

Door 2 - Knyh

After closing the door behind him and flicking a light switch, Knyh's eyes were greeted by a large room with bookcases lining the walls, as well as creating a maze-like atmosphere. One could walk around this library for days and still find something new to read. What drew his attention the most, however, was a binder on top of a table. "TRAPS AND TREASURES - AN OVERVIEW" was written on the cover, and he couldn't keep himself from opening it. The contents were, to say the least, interesting. "While there exists records of multiple Traps and Treasures games, two in particular stand out. The first one was masterminded by Flsurfergirl Lebowski and titled 'After Dark'. An unknown incident lead to it ending abruptly. A second one was masterminded by Labana House, titled 'Hasting's Discovery'. This one also ended abruptly. These events are possibly connected to the Incident. To help humanity, the Ouroboros Project has been established."

One thing was clear: All that had happened was part of something much, much bigger. Was this game part of a bigger picture? Nonetheless, this would prove vital.

Knyh (+4)

Door 3 - Scarlett

Scarlett went on her own through the third door. After all, leaving a door untouched would be a bad idea. In most cases, at least. This time, it would have been a good idea. She found herself inside an office, filled with desks holding turned off computer monitors. There was one exception. She moved to look at it. "The Ouroboros project was established to help humanity recover from the Incident. In order to 'close the circle',-" she read, although she never got to finish the sentence. A bang reverbrated through the room as a bullet travelled through her head. Moments after, a shadow moved out of the room...

Scarlett (DEAD)

The six who remained reconvened in another large room, where the five who went through the first door listened eagerly to Knyh explaining his discovery. If the Ouroboros project was meant to help humanity, why were they sent to die? And why did it resemble a Traps and Treasures game so much? What could possibly be worth this? Another three doors awaited them, with the words "Levitated Sheer Hurt" written above. Whatever went down next would surely be interesting.

Send me your actions by Thursday October 5th, 23.59 GMT+1! There are three doors to choose from.

(Hopefully I will have time to update faster this time)
